Why is smart street light an important entrance to a smart city?

If you ask what is the most numerous and intensive infrastructure in a city, the answer must be undoubtedly streetlights. As a result, street lights have become a natural carrier of sensors and a source of networked information collection in the construction of future smart cities. In a sense, smart street lights that have undergone intelligent upgrading and transformation are an important entrance to smart cities.

Based on this, on November 1st, Philips Lighting reached a strategic cooperation with China Telecom Beijing. Philips Lighting will utilize its intelligent interconnection lighting products and technological advantages, combined with China Telecom's new generation Internet of Things (Narrowband Internet of Things, NB IoT) technology and Tianyi Cloud technology services, to jointly accelerate the construction of China's smart city.

Smart street lights, making cities more energy-efficient in lighting, have always been the "big electricity consumers" in cities, accounting for almost 1/4 of all electricity consumption. The energy consumption of street lights can be said to be "indispensable" (according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, China's electricity generation in 2015 was 5618 trillion kilowatt hours, and road lighting electricity consumption accounted for 9%, about 505.6 billion kilowatt hours). How to achieve energy conservation and environmental protection while ensuring lighting demand is a highly concerned issue for any enterprise that provides urban level lighting equipment and solutions.

In the past few years, a common measure for enterprises has been to replace traditional sodium lamps with more energy-efficient LED lamps, which has achieved significant results. However, with the continuous expansion of urban scale and the increasing number of street lights, can we better solve this problem from a system level, in addition to replacing the lamps themselves? Therefore, intelligent lighting control systems emerged, which can further achieve secondary energy conservation on the basis of LED lamps.

Originally, traditional street lighting systems mainly relied on manual adjustment of lighting, while intelligent lighting systems were able to control remote single or multiple light switches, dimming, monitoring, etc. through wireless networks based on environmental sensing data or terminal device control center software. That is to say, the intelligent lighting control system in smart cities can adjust and control street lights according to time periods, weather, or other needs, thereby avoiding unnecessary energy waste.

If all urban lighting uses LED lights, it can save 50% of energy, but if intelligent internet lighting systems are used, it can save up to 80% of energy, "said Wang Yun, Senior Vice President of Philips Lighting and President of Greater China

There are currently 300 million street lights worldwide, with only about 2% truly achieving intelligent connectivity, so there is a vast space for imagination in the future.

The presence of street lights ensures the visibility of pedestrians and vehicles in dark environments and during nighttime driving, so in the event of a malfunction, timely maintenance is necessary.

Philips Greater China President Wang Yun stated in an interview with the Internet of Things think tank, "The traditional streetlight maintenance mode is relatively passive, and it is difficult for the management department to know which streetlight will break and which will not... More often than not, we hear feedback that several lights on this road have already broken and will be replaced when residents begin to react. However, if we have Philips' CityTouchflex system, then
